Best practices for tracking magazine inventory, maintaining records, and supporting regulatory compliance.
Past Courses
Secondary Blasting Today is a two-day, in-person course focused on building practical skills and regulatory confidence for secondary blasting operations. It combines classroom instruction with hands-on field application so participants understand the fundamentals behind explosives use and initiation, the compliance requirements that shape blasting work, and the field techniques used to safely and effectively break oversized rock or manage secondary reduction scenarios. The course is designed for people who need a stronger grounding in both the “why” (regulations, safety, theory) and the “how” (field execution, calculations, documentation) of secondary blasting.
On Day 1 (classroom), participants cover the basics of explosives and initiation systems, along with the safety expectations and regulatory framework that governs blasting. Instruction includes general safety, PPE and field safety considerations, and the risk assessment process used to plan work responsibly. The course also addresses federal ATF regulations, key safety recommendations, and relevant Colorado regulations, including how to apply reference tools such as the American Table of Distances (ATD) when making compliance and separation-distance decisions. Secondary blasting theory and the calculations used in planning are introduced so attendees are prepared to apply concepts in the field.
On Day 2 (hands-on), the course shifts into practical training centered on secondary blasting techniques and workflow. Participants work through blast design for secondary blasting, drilling/loading/blasting practices, and methods for blast evaluation to understand results and opportunities to improve. The day also emphasizes operational accountability—magazine inventory and record keeping (including a magazine-focused component noted on the flyer), plus how to prepare clear blast reports that support compliance and consistency. Participants also learn supporting calculations and parameters commonly used in the field, including inventory calculations and ATD-related considerations. The course counts for 16 hours of Colorado OPS-approved continuing education, supporting Colorado blasting permit renewal.

A 2-day, in-person format with real field time. Day 1 is classroom learning; Day 2 is hands-on practical training focused on secondary blasting workflow.
Clear coverage of compliance expectations. You’ll learn how federal ATF rules and Colorado requirements affect day-to-day blasting operations, documentation, and safe handling.
Safety and risk assessment baked into everything. Expect emphasis on PPE, field hazards, and a structured risk assessment process before blasting work begins.
Secondary blasting focus (not just general blasting). The examples and design discussions center on secondary blasting scenarios and the decision-making that goes with them.
Key calculations you actually use. You’ll work with practical items like ATD, drilling parameters, and inventory-related calculations tied to safe planning and compliance.
Magazine inventory & recordkeeping expectations. You’ll cover how inventory is tracked and what records are required (the flyer also mentions a magazine-related component).
Hands-on drilling/loading/blasting workflow. Day 2 includes practical exposure to how drilling, loading, and blasting steps come together safely and effectively.
Post-blast evaluation and improvement. You’ll learn how to assess outcomes, identify issues, and apply lessons to future work.
Reporting and documentation. Expect guidance on what goes into blast reports and how to document consistently.
Assessment at the end. There’s a quiz/homework component and a final exam or state exam option, depending on requirements.
Continuing education credit. The course counts for 16 hours toward Colorado blasting permit renewal.
Core safety practices for blasting work, hazard awareness, and safe jobsite procedures.
Introduction to explosive materials and foundational concepts, with context on how modern practices evolved.
Overview of initiation methods and components, including how systems are selected and used safely.
Key concepts and basic calculations used to plan and carry out secondary blasting effectively.
Required PPE, field hazard controls, and how to perform a practical risk assessment before blasting activities.
How to use ATD guidance to determine safe separation distances related to explosives storage and handling.
Review of Colorado-specific requirements that impact blasting operations, compliance, and documentation.
Best practices for tracking magazine inventory, maintaining records, and supporting regulatory compliance.
Fundamentals of planning a surface/bench blast, including layout considerations and key design inputs.
Hands-on workflow covering drilling coordination, safe loading practices, and blast execution steps.
How to assess blast outcomes, identify performance issues, and apply findings to improve future results.
What to document and how to produce clear, consistent reports that support quality control and compliance.
End-of-course assessment to confirm understanding and readiness to apply concepts in the field.
