Vaping and Explosives: What Blasters Need to Know

Vaping and Explosives: What Blasters Need to Know

At Petr Explosives Group’s Practical Explosives Training School (PETS), questions about vaping and e-cigarettes come up regularly. Many students ask: “Can I vape while working with explosives?”

Here’s the clear answer:

The ATF does not have a specific regulation that says “blasters cannot use e-cigarettes or vapes.” However, there are several important safety, compliance, and operational reasons why vaping around explosives is strongly discouraged or outright prohibited on most job sites.

1. No Smoking or Open Flame Near Explosives

ATF regulations (27 CFR Part 555) strictly control ignition sources around explosives. Key rules include:

  • No smoking while handling explosives
  • No smoking inside or near explosives magazines (storage)
  •  Keep all ignition sources away from detonators, boosters, pyrotechnics, and flammable materials

While a vape doesn’t produce an open flame like a cigarette, it still involves heat and potential spark risks from the battery and heating coil. Treating a vape the same as any other smoking device is the safest approach.

2. MSHA, OSHA, and Employer Policies

Most blasting operations fall under Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) oversight. These organizations, along with nearly all responsible contractors, enforce strict policies that prohibit:

  • Smoking or vaping around explosives
  • Using any potential ignition source in explosive trucks or near blast holes
  • Carrying devices that could create sparks or heat in sensitive areas

Violating these policies can result in disciplinary action, removal from the site, or worse.

3. Electronic Detonators and Sensitive Systems

This is one of the most important modern considerations:  Most vapes contain lithium batteries, heating coils, and electronic circuitry. While they are not typically high RF emitters like two-way radios or cell phones, many companies still maintain a no unnecessary electronics policy  near:

  • Blasting caps
  • Electronic detonators
  • Sensitive initiation systems

Always follow the specific recommendations provided by your electronic detonator manufacturer (Orica, Dyno Nobel, Enaex, etc.).

4. Industry Standard Practice

Professional blasting crews typically enforce a simple, practical rule:

No smoking and no vaping during loading, hookup, tie-in, and blasting operations.

This policy helps reduce:

  • Accidental ignition risks
  • Distractions on the shot line
  •  Potential contamination of explosive products
  • Professionalism issues on multi-contractor sites

A practical phrase we use in training:

“If you wouldn’t light a cigarette next to explosives, don’t assume a vape belongs there either.”

Bottom Line from Petr Explosives Group

Even though there is no direct ATF prohibition on personal vaping, the combination of federal storage and handling rules, MSHA/OSHA requirements, and standard industry safety practices means vaping has no place during active explosives operations.

The safest and most professional approach is to leave the vape in your vehicle or break area — well away from the explosives loading zone, magazines, and blast site.

Safety First

At Petr Explosives Group, we believe in building habits that protect lives, licenses, and livelihoods. Clear, consistent safety rulesincluding restrictions on smoking and vaping — are a key part of that culture.
